Mothers Day with the Spunky Old Broad

Yesterday was Mother’s Day and 4 generations of us went out for dinner. It was very nice, very noisy and very hot, so we ate indoors. There were 4 mothers in the group as well, so it was appreciated by all.
I told you I was in Chicago for a board meeting of the Institute of Management Consultants and I took one afternoon to go on the Architectural Tour done by boat. It was fantastic and the docent narrating the trip was superb. The weather was chilly and it rained several times while I was there, but Chicago is a great place to visit and I enjoyed myself.
As you have probably heard by now, there’s another fantastic discovery in Britain of an 81 year old singer who is being dubbed another Susan Boyle. With Betty White’s performance on SNL which was a hoot, we S.O.B.’s are really coming back in style. I must admit that when I hear my age (72) I shudder a little bit until I realize I feel terrific and keep going at a whirlwind pace.
In addition, my old dancing partner called me and said he is going to our 55th high school reunion in the fall (as I am too) and we will dance in together like no time has passed. He is exactly the same weight as in high school (which wasn’t very much) and everyone used to marvel that he could pick me up and swing me around (for which we got censored in the 50’s).
All in all, I am encouraged by all the stories of women I know or who are members of this group, who continue to set records with their accomplishments. If any of you have a story you’d like to tell in this e-zine, just send it to me at gayle@spunkyoldbroad.com I’d love to share it with our readers.
Question and Answer:
Q: I really want a definitive answer. I eat reasonably, walk three times a week, and take pretty good care of myself. But I seem to be getting flabby anyway. Anything I can do?
A: Welcome to the world of reality. No matter what we do, as we age, gravity sets in. I work out anywhere from 1 ½ to 2 hours a day, 7 days a week, with weights, classes, machines etc. And I still have jiggly parts. But I can tell you, if you stop doing those things, you will really see a difference. You will never be who you were at 21 or 31, but you can be much better than a whole lot of people your age. Because I work out so much, I sometimes wonder if there would be any difference if I didn’t. Well, all I need is 3 days of not working out by being at a convention or meeting, and I see and feel the difference. So the definitive answer is, keep a healthy diet, try to exercise at least 30 minutes every day, change your routine every 21 to 30 days, and keep a positive attitude.
Tips:
1. Tackle just one area for yourself and anyone else. First, you must take care of you. Then figure out how to help someone else or cause.
2. Persistence, discipline and commitment are crucial factors for success. It may be easier to let it go, but it is the essence of leadership.
3. Have fire, don’t ever quit, get immense joy and pleasure out of what you do, and know you make a difference because you’re an inspiration for everyone
