Women Over 50 House Fire

Wow! What a week. After a wonderful time in Jackson Hole, my son headed for San Diego and I went back to Miami Beach to pick up Abby. I then got on a plane for San Diego and my son headed back to Miami Beach. On his second night at home, his bedroom caught fire, and in just minutes was totally engulfed in flames. Thank heaven he got out with only a burn on his heel, but the trauma remains. Although the bedroom was totally destroyed, his entire house is covered in soot and smoke damage, and 25 years of memories and collectibles are gone. He is staying at my house and said if it wasn’t for that, he would be totally devastated. He feels my husband all around him and maybe this will make his move back with me happen a little faster. He’s setting up an office there, and it looks like we’ll be spending a lot more time together. May I suggest to all of you to check your exits, fire extinguishers, an escape plan and what and who you would rescue. With children and pets, it becomes much more complicated and you have…

Football Season is On

25th September, 2010 - Posted by gaylecarson - No Comments

I tried to find something interesting on TV yesterday as the rain came down, but all the major stations had football, so I tried Hallmark (which I love) and USA (which has great re-runs).  I used to watch football with my husband, as he was a fanatic.  Watched all channels at once, yelled at everyone, and was totally occupied every Sunday.  Now, I just tune in for the scores so I know what's going on.

I ended up developing some handouts for programs I have coming up, and reading the second volume of a 500 page missive from Jay Abraham.  Good thing I read with a high lighter or I'd never remember anything.  My animals were happy to have me home all day and kept me company as I was doing my various "chores."

It's reallly fun to exercise with them because the cat lies on my stomach (and that helps with the situps) while the dog is busy licking my face (that can be annoying).  Anyway, they are lots of company and that's the important thing.

Spent some time this weekend with the Guiness Book of Records artist, Conni Gordon, who is a dear friend of mine.  If you…

Miami Beach

24th September, 2010 - Posted by gaylecarson - 2 Comments

Another grey day in Miami Beach, but at least the temperature
is 70. I left the North over 50 years ago, to escape the snow
and cold. I’ve never missed it–not the seasons, nor the
weather. Although my personal temperature changed after all
my chemo treatments, and my favorite temp is 65 to 75, I just
hate the cold.
This was a very busy birthday weekend. My kids took me out to
a wonderful Cuban restaurant on Friday evening, then came over
with my ex-son-in-law and his wife on Saturday for brunch, and
on Saturday night had a wonderful dinner at the steakhouse in
the Fontainebleau Hotel with my marketing partner from Wisconsin.
Yesterday, the kids and I (daughter, granddaughter and great
grandson) went to a picnic with a networking group I belong to.
My son is in San Diego so he did his thing with me last week.
I have been so busy watching the olympics that I haven’t done much
reading this week. I so enjoy the competitiveness, comraderie,
joy, smiles, and especially the “no excuses” mentality of
the olympians. Just…

The Fall Has Finally Arrived

21st September, 2010 - Posted by gaylecarson - No Comments

Unfortunately in Miami Beach, it is still hot, hot, hot.  But the kids are back in school and Labor Day has come and gone, so it feels like we are in the home stretch of 2009.  Believe it or not, I took an online Defensive Driving course to lower my insurance rate, and I can’t believe how much I didn’t know.  I suggest it to everyone who thinks they have the answers to what correct driving is.  I went from 53% on my pre-test to a passing score on my post test after study.  Amazing!

Spent the weekend catching up on good movies that are finally out there and enjoyed each of them immensely.  I must confess that I don’t go to sad, horror, drama or those kinds of movies.  There’s enough of that in my life.  When I go, I want to laugh and be entertained.  I also had my first bag of popcorn in a long time, and really enjoyed that.

Am nursing a bad knee, and the oncologist wonders if it’s from the medication I am still on for my breast cancer.  I don’t think so, but I continue my workouts (yes they are strenuous), and we…

Women Over 50 Can Go Sight Seeing!

September 20, 2010

I am in Jackson Hole, Wyoming enjoying the massive expanse of the west. The Tetons are magnificent and I stare at them outside my window. I’m here with my son and am thrilled we were able to do this as Jackson Hole was a place my husband and I enjoyed to the max. We went horseback riding and of course as is always the case, I got the biggest horse. For some reason, every time I ride I am on the biggest highest horse. So after I used a picnic table to get on board, it was a great ride through the mountains and the view of the town was outstanding.

Last night we had dinner at the Historic Wort Hotel. It was built in 1934 and is still a big drawing place with great food. We also made a trek to Yellowstone and went through the Elk Refuge in Jackson. And there are lots of dogs here which makes it heaven for me. I head back to Miami Beach tomorrow and then to San Diego the day after that. I know the travel is insane, but until the middle of November, this is how it goes.…

Spunky Old Broad talks in Oklahoma City

13th September, 2010 - Posted by gaylecarson - No Comments

September 13, 2010

I am writing to you today from Oklahoma City where I did a program yesterday to a group of law firm clients. They were a wonderful group and I talked about the “9 Secrets of Living a Regret Free Life.” The most important thing to me was that most of them were even bigger animals lovers than I was. We had “Troubles” their Maltese mascot dog there, another person had a farm with horses ,miniature horses, cats, dogs, a rabbit etc. And many felt like I do, if you don’t like pets, we probably won’t like you. Anyway, I head home today, ready to go on another trip on Thursday.

We had a local S.O.B. meeting on Friday, and I also did another radio show on Thursday. So life continues to be busy and interesting and I sure hope yours is also. One of my friends is starting a new breast cancer site and I’ll tell you more about it as it develops.

I want to take this time to also remind all of you to continue to do whatever you need to in order to make sure you are doing your prevention screenings. Mammograms, colonoscopies, general…

Women Over 50 Celebrate Labor Day

6th September, 2010 - Posted by gaylecarson - 1 Comment

September 6, 2010

Today is Labor Day and a lazy one for most people.  It is also my
parent’s anniversary.  They gave me the model of a happy marriage
and I must say that I chose a man very much like my father.  Easy
going, loved his wife and family, did for others etc.  My husband
was a little more of a dreamer and experimenter, but perhaps that
was a sign of the times.  My dad was a product of the depression
but still took care of everyone and was a community leader.  He
was also President of the NY Pharmaceutical Assn, even though his
pharmacy was in a very small town.  My son tells me the best thing
that ever happened to me, was being born to my parents and the
best thing that ever happened to him was being born to my husband
and me.

Well, it was quite a week.  I did two radio shows and also headed
up to NYC by my lonesome for some R&R.  Saw “Memphis” and “Promises
Promises” and loved them both.  Went on an NBC tour and did a…
