I’m Back at Camp Again

I just came back from the Veteran Speakers Retreat.  This year we went to the Allenberry Resort in Boiling Springs, PA.  While it is a lovely place, and the food is to die for, once again I was at camp.  There was no cell phone coverage, at least not with AT&T, and I could only get the Internet in the main meeting room.  While we all talk about wanting to get away from it all, it is nice to be able to connect.  Also there were only 5 TV channels, no CBS or CNN, and it took a guidance course for me to understand how to turn on the TV in the first place.  The rooms were just o.k. but they had a wonderful production of “The King and I” that was strictly first class at their playhouse.

Once again, I learned how lovely travel can be.  On my way to Harrisburg, I had to connect through Atlanta.  We got stuck on the runway because of the rain, so I was late getting into Harrisburg and had everyone waiting on me.  On the way back, they closed Atlanta, so we went to Greenville to refuel and were stuck there for over an hour.  There were two people on the plane who were actually going to Greenville and wanted to get off, seeing no sense in going back to Atlanta and then back to Greenville when everything was running so late.  It took a detailed conversation with TSA but they made it.

When I got to Atlanta, I missed my connection of course, but luckily there was a 5 p.m. that left at 7:30 p.m. and finally got home after 10 p.m.  And people envy all the travel I do!

The people who attended were great and new legends were elected.  I am proud to be a member of the 2007 Class of Speaking Legends.  And all the people who go are seasoned speakers who are enjoying themselves in the second half of their lives.  We lost one of our leaders in John Jay Daly.  How interesting that he passed away on the day the retreat started.  He was one of a kind and a true treasure.
